Multi-letter endings are usually what people actually want. A word ending in -ment
is a much more useful thing to search for than a word ending in t.

Why word endings matter more than beginnings

In English, the end of a word carries most of its grammar. -ing marks a continuing action, -ed marks the past, -ness turns a description into a thing, -ly turns it into an adverb. Searching by ending is often really searching by what kind of word you need.

That is also why these lists are useful for teaching. A list of words ending in
-tion is a spelling pattern lesson, not just a list.

The rare endings

Very few English words end in J, Q, V or Z. Those lists are short enough to read in full, which is why they get searched so heavily by crossword solvers who have hit a wall.

Which letters do the most English words end in?

E, S, Y, D and T account for most of them. J, Q, V and Z are extremely rare word endings in English, which is exactly why those lists get looked up so often.

Can I use these lists for rhyming?

Partly. Words that share an ending often rhyme, but not always — “though” and “rough” share four letters and do not rhyme at all. Use the ending lists as a starting point and check by ear.
