Party games
Pictionary and Charades both need words that can actually be drawn or acted out. A random dictionary word usually cannot be — try miming “notwithstanding” and you will see the problem. That is why we built separate tools with hand-picked word lists:

Writing prompts and brainstorming
Generate five random words and write a paragraph that uses all of them. It forces connections your brain would not have made on its own, which is the whole point of a prompt. What is a random word generator?
A random word generator is a tool that picks words at random from a dictionary and shows them to you one at a time or as a list. You set the rules — how many words, what type, how long, which letters they start or end with — and the generator picks from whatever is left.
The useful part is not the randomness. Any script can pick a word at random. The useful part is which dictionary it picks from. A full English dictionary holds more than 200,000 entries, and the overwhelming majority are archaic, technical or proper nouns. A random word generator that draws from all of them will hand you zygomatic and
aalii and be no help at all. This one draws from 6,000 words that appear in ordinary English, with names, places and abbreviations stripped out, and every one carries a definition.
How to use the random word generator
- Choose how many words you want, from one to a hundred.
- Set the length — short, medium, long, or an exact number of letters.
- Pick a word type if you need one: noun, verb, adjective or adverb.

Tap the heart beside any word to save it. Saved words collect in a panel at the bottom of the tool and stay there when you come back, so you can build a list over several visits and copy or export it when you are done.
Random word generator for Pictionary and Charades
This is the most common reason people want random words, and it is worth saying plainly: a general random word generator is the wrong tool for it. Party games need words that can be drawn or acted out, and most words cannot be. That is why there are two separate tools with hand-picked lists — the Pictionary word generator

Generate three to five words and write a paragraph that uses all of them. The constraint is the point: you did not choose the words, so there is nothing to second-guess, which is what makes it work on a day when nothing is coming. The length and word type filters exist mostly for classroom use. Random word generator vs a word list
A generator gives you a random sample. A word list gives you everything that fits a pattern. They answer different questions, and it is worth knowing which one you actually want.

How the generator picks a word
There is no clever algorithm here and it would not help if there were. The tool holds a list of 6,000 common English words in your browser, applies whatever filters you have set, and picks from what is left using your browser’s random number generator. Ask for more than one word and it will not repeat itself until the filtered pool runs out.
The list matters more than the randomness. A full English dictionary has over 200,000 entries, and the vast majority are archaic, technical or proper nouns. Generating “zygomatic” for a Pictionary round is technically random and completely useless. So the pool here starts from a frequency-ranked list of words that appear in ordinary English, with names, places and abbreviations stripped out.
What each number next to a word means

The small number in the corner of each letter tile is that letter’s point value. Syllable counts are estimated from the vowel pattern, which is right the vast majority of the time but will occasionally disagree with a dictionary on unusual words.

What is a random word generator?
It is a tool that picks words at random from a dictionary and shows them to you one at a time or as a list. This one draws from 6,000 common English words, so you get words people actually recognise rather than obscure dictionary entries nobody can use.
How many words does the generator use?
6,000 words, filtered down from a full English dictionary. Proper nouns, names and abbreviations have been removed, because in a word game or a writing exercise they are almost never useful.
Can I get only nouns, verbs or adjectives?
Yes. Use the Word type dropdown. Every word in the list is tagged with its part of speech, so you can generate 20 nouns for a vocabulary worksheet or 5 verbs for a writing prompt.
Can I control the length of the words?
Yes. Set a minimum and maximum number of letters. You can also force words to start with, end with, or contain a specific letter pattern, which is what makes it useful for Wordle practice and crossword clues.
Do the words come with meanings?
Tick Show meanings and each word appears with a short definition. Definitions load only when you ask for them, which keeps the page fast for everyone who does not need them.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
It is free and there is no account. The whole generator runs inside your browser — no words are sent to a server, and it keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.
What is the best random word generator for Pictionary?
Not a general one. Party games need words that can actually be drawn, and most dictionary words cannot be. Use the Pictionary word generator, which has a hand-picked list sorted into easy, medium and hard.
Can I save the words I like?
Yes. Tap the heart beside any word and it goes into your saved list, which appears at the bottom of the tool. Saved words stay in your browser between visits, so you can build a list over several sessions and then copy it or download it as a CSV.
How many words can I generate at once?
Up to a hundred at a time. Below thirteen words they appear as individual cards with meanings and letter tiles; above that they switch to a compact grid so a long list stays readable.
Does the random word generator repeat words?
Not within a single batch. Ask for twenty words and you get twenty different ones. It only repeats if your filters are narrow enough that fewer than twenty words match.
