The people who win are rarely the best artists — they are the ones who understand that the drawing is a communication problem with a sixty second deadline.

Draw the category before the thing

The most common mistake is starting with the object. If the word is lighthouse, most people begin drawing a tall striped tower. Their team says “tower”, “chimney”, “candle”, and the round dies.

Better: draw the sea first. Two wavy lines and a horizon takes four seconds and tells your team the category. Now the tower can only be one thing. Establish the world, then put the object in it.

Use scale and relationships, not detail

Detail is expensive and rarely helps. A recognisable silhouette next to something of known size communicates more than five seconds of shading. If you are drawing an octopus, the count of the legs matters and nothing else does.

Watch your team, not your paper

Good drawers look up constantly. Your team is shouting guesses, and those guesses tell you exactly what your drawing currently looks like. If they say “spider” while you draw an octopus, you know to add water immediately. Drawing with your head down for forty seconds and then looking up is how rounds get lost.

Abandon a bad drawing early

Sunk cost destroys more Pictionary rounds than bad drawing. If twenty seconds in nobody is close, cross it out and start a completely different approach. A second attempt with thirty seconds beats a doomed first attempt with sixty.

Four habits that cost rounds

Starting in the middle of the page. You will run out of room. Start small and low.

Drawing letters or numbers. Against the rules everywhere and it gets the round voided.

Perfectionism. Erasing and redrawing the same line is the clearest sign of a losing round.

Ignoring compound words. For fire hydrant, draw fire, then draw a hydrant. Two easy pictures beat one hard one.

If you are guessing

Shout early and shout often, including guesses you are sure are wrong. Every wrong guess tells the drawer what the picture looks like, and that feedback is worth more than a careful silent think. Say the category out loud too — “animal? food?” — so the drawer knows whether the world is established yet.

Ready to play?
